Abstract

This paper explores theoretically the thermal effects of green roofs on the built environment at micro-scale. Two models have been developed; one describing temperature distributions based on heat transfer algorithms and one describing the temperature and humidity distribution based on heat and mass transfer algorithms. A comparison has been made between the results of the two algorithms, focussing on the effect of vapour on temperatures, both air and surface ones. With the use of the heat-mass transfer model the surface and air temperatures at concrete and green roofs have been estimated for different climates. Emphasis is given to hot climates with different classifications of vapour concentrations (arid, dry, and humid). Green roofs have been compared with white coated concrete ones (different values of albedo). In this way the thermal effects of green roofs have been investigated in the microclimates of cities with divergent climatic characteristics.
