Abstract

The following project is an architectural proposal, carried out by the authors, for a Girls’ Home in Mexico City. It is supported by an altruistic organization whose particular objective is to look after homeless girls who are pregnant or have children. During their stay, the girls are assisted by counselors, who perform the mother’s role, bes ides doctors and psychologists. Once the girls have been spotted, picked up on the streets and assisted during labor, they are supported until they are able to rejoin society. In order to do so successfully, the following principles have to be accomplished: learning to be part of a family, learning to live harmoniously with other girls of their same background, dealing with specific tasks which have to be performed with responsibility, receiving formal education, and being trained to perform a productive job. The purpose of this project is to provide these girls with an environment, which can be comfortable physically and psychologically. It is also intended to save energy and natural resources, by means of a bioclimatic design, passive strategies (heating, daylighting, natural ventilation, solar control and noise control) and ecotechnologies (solar water heating collectors, photovoltaic cells, harness rainfall, water and waste recycling, greenhouses,…).
