Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the benefits and limitations of the use of cardboard in buildings. This can bring long-term benefits through reduced waste of energy and materials as well as offer an alternative to reduce housing construction costs. The use of cardboard in civil construction can substitute energy intensive materials or products made of non-renewable sources, increasing paper recycling and reducing final volume of waste in our landfills. The starting point for the structural system development was to study the existing literature and actual examples. Most of the studied references were related to buildings intended for a short lifespan, but the aim of the project was to develop a durable house that would also be economical and ecological. The processes of paper and cardboard production were studied as well as those of recycling and other products used in this project. Aspects such as compressive, tensile and bending stresses, fire and water resistance, thermal and acoustics were also considered. This project helps in the investigation of an unconventional technology and intends to encourage not only the use of cardboard but also the research and use of other prime waste materials.
