Abstract

This paper presents a thermal performance evaluation of walls on timber houses in Santa Catarina State -SC, in southern Brazil. The study was performed by a field survey of some wooden walls constructive systems (precast timber houses in Florianópolis and traditional timber houses in inland State) and the analysis carried on according the Brazilian Standards Brief (Thermal performance in buildings – Brazilian Bioclimatic Zones and Building Guidelines for Low-Cost Houses), with thermal transmitance, thermal capacity, thermal delay and solar heat factor properties calculated. Santa Catarina State includes four (4) bioclimatic zones according the Brazilian Standards Brief, with a sub-tropical climate conditions, and an annual average temperature of 13.4 °C (Plateau) to 20.5 °C (near the Coastal Zone). The results show that the thermal performance evaluation is appropriate to thirteen (13) out of twenty-four (24) wooden walls constructive systems and partly appropriate to other two (2) systems.
