Abstract

Taking as reference the works of architect Severiano Mário Porto (b.1930) in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, this essay aims to discuss the concept of an eco-efficient regionalism and its unfolding in the process of design intervention in architectural space. In these issues, we intend to analyze how did the architect’s buildings solved the conflicts between the physical environment and the local spatial and construction solutions in face of the contemporary requirements of rationality related to an eco-efficient concept design. Severiano Mário Porto is best known for his pioneer works in favor of an architecture that responds to the specific conditions of the tropical environment. As soon as he settled in the city of Manaus, in 1965, he became concerned with the seriousness of the environmental impacts caused by the rapid urban growth in the Amazonian region. Therefore, in his buildings, Severiano Porto accomplishes a connection between the instruments and objectives of the modernist tradition to a profound attention to the manner in which the landscape, climate and culture influence social habits and architecture. In this regard, we seek to understand how the traditional architectural solutions of the Amazonian environment were translated by the critical attitude of the architect towards a sustainable architecture.
