Abstract

This research analyzes the thermal behavior of two office buildings (built during the last decade) located in different cities of Chile with the purpose of contributing to an efficient use of energy in the commercial public sector of the country. The mentioned cities are Santiago (33º26’ S; 70º41’ W; altitude: 520m) with temperate climate and Iquique (20º32’ S; 70º11’ W; altitude: 52m) with hot climate with a big influence of the ocean. Annual heating and cooling heat demand was estimated using Trnsys 15.0. The studied buildings show a non efficient heating and cooling energy use. Strategies like solar protection, nocturnal ventilation and the use of double glazing have shown to be effective for achieving comfort with an efficient use of energy throughout the year in both cities.
