Abstract

Bioconstruction arises from the need to find and rediscover an alternative way of building, keeping the balance between man and his habitat. In an age of environment degradation awareness, it aims to attend to a new demand, comprising habitability, health and confort. Bioconstruction develops and applies natural and energetic technologies, fulfilling the environment quality and sustainability requirements. In this work an example of Bioconstruction in Spain is presented. The major guidelines are identified and described as environmental protection, the variability of alternatives and enhanced energetic efficiency are pursuit. A case study – building, author and user – presents the building materials and techniques used and their selection parameters, the bioclimatic architecture techniques and the use of alternative energy sources. This study includes the evaluation of self-sufficiency in buildings, water and air treatment procedures and the geobiologic processes used. An up to date diagnosis of bioconstruction in Spain is presented and a discussion on its requirements, compatibility with the new technologies, revivel of traditional architecture and its aplicability in todays society completes the work. A final sugestion for short, medium and long term actions for the development of Bioconstruction is presented.
