Abstract

Timber has always been considered as an important material in architecture, not only in terms of finishing components but also in structural elements. From that perspective, timber protection against destructive agents becomes extremely relevant at the moment of architectural design. We have to remember that Radiata Pine, which is the most used species in our country, is considered as “not urable” from the point of view of durability, thus, it needs to be protected with the adequate preservative and through a reliable impregnation method. In our days we have timber preservatives that meet all the requirements posed by customers in Chile as well as abroad. These are products that comply efficiently their protection function against timber destructive agents, and are also considered environmentally friendly. The important issue is to provide to the architects in charge of design and specifications, the adequate tools to use these preservatives in the right way. It is crucial to know which preservatives are used in different geographical zones and in the different elements within a same construction.
