Abstract

The construction field is certainly a significant component to a country’s economy. Its share in the Colombian Gross Domestic Product ( GDP) in the year 2002 was 4.78%. After the third quarter 2003, its share reached 4.96% (Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística, DANE (2004) being construction one of the areas that increased the most during the year 2003. Despite its importance, the problems that the construction field has to face are well known: low productivity, poor quality, high risk of accidents, deviations in timelines and budgets, among others. Lean Construction is a new philosophy guided toward construction production management. Its main objective is the elimination of non – adding activities (wastes). In order to contribute to such aim, Ballard and Howell (2000), designed a new planning and controlling system, known as the Last Planner System, which introduced fundamental changes in the way construction projects are planned and controlled. The objective of this article is to present the outcomes of the application of Last Planner System in construction projects in Medellin, Colombia, S.A. during 2003. The application of this system made part of the research study: “Implementation of improvement construction management program” (Botero, L. F. , Alvarez , M. E. 2003) Based on the experience obtained in the year 2002 with the first test developed in the research study “productivity improvement in housing projects through lean construction philosophy” (Botero; 2002), a group of construction companies was constituted. This group of companies implemented the Last Planner system during the year 2003. The results show an improvement trend during the time the system was applied as revealed the PPC Indicator (Percent Plan Complete).
