Abstract

It is self-evident that white is the lightest, most reflective colour and it is frequently taken for granted by designers aiming to provide low-energy buildings that white interiors will provide cheerful bright settings for the occupants and help to save energy that would otherwise be consumed by additional artificial lighting. But is this always the case? This paper will review the ways in which white has been used in interiors – the cultural and programmatic contexts for whiteness, the environmental arguments that have supported its adoption, and the potential dilemmas that have been encountered in the design of predominantly white environments. The difficulty in communicating ideas about the quality of light, especially when considered from a more dynamic temporal perspective, should not be underestimated. The broader aim of this guidance is nevertheless to encourage a more nuanced, more precise appraisal of lighting strategies in their broader topographic, climatic and programmatic context.
