Abstract

This work presents a summary of the deleterious mechanisms that occur in the porous concrete under action of aggressive waters, and applies this knowledge to study the case of the ruins of the building Éricka located in Olinda, Permambuco, Brazil. The water is the principal agent of degradation of the concrete and acts as a vehicle of transport of aggressive ions and also as a source of chemical processes of degradation. The deterioration degree is associated with the permeability of the element and the speed of degradation associated with the ion type, its concentration in the water and to the chemical composition of the concrete. in practice, several processes of chemical and physical degradation occur at the same time and can be reinforced mutually. The determination of ionic concentrations, ph and kinds of solutes dissolved in the water permitted to identify the preponderant phenomenon of degradation that occurred in the case of building Éricka. Based on the information obtained and in the analysis accomplished, it was concluded that the ruins of the building Éricka was due to the degradation of the concrete elements used in the foundation caused by the action of aggressive waters.
