Abstract

The study of strut and tie model for analysis and design of short corbels of structural concrete is developed, emphasizing the basic differences between long corbels (normal cantilever beams), short corbels and very short corbels. The methodology of the latter of these has been studied very little, which has at times led to gross errors in the use of the unsuitable mechanical model for this design. The deduction of a concrete effectiveness factor “v”, in which are included the contributions of its compression strength, of its strain ex, e1, e2, and the relationship a/d, which defines the type of corbel, enables a consistent methodology to be elaborated for the analysis and design of these structural elements made of high-strength concrete. A study of struts is carried out through a strut and tie modeling for the compressed regions of concrete. The details of the nodes of the model are analyzed, emphasizing types and characteristics, so as to enable the concrete strength to be checked at the critical points. This study aims to establish a consistent methodology for design and detailing of short and very short corbels of high-strength concrete.
