Abstract

This paper evaluates the performance of the award-winning housing scheme of Shenley Lodge-X in Milton Keynes, UK. Energy modelling and user survey revealed that the main feature of this scheme- a glazed street does not contribute greatly to the reduction of heating loads but did add to overheating in summers. Moreover, it did not provide a focal point for the community as intended. The residents nevertheless approved of the glazed street since it provided a sense of enclosure and protection against adverse weather conditions. It is therefore left to question about the viability of glazed streets in British housing. In spite of some psychological benefits the absence of maintenance and social benefits and incorrect configuration compromises its performance.
