Abstract

This paper introduces the climatic urban design as an alternative to sustainability. It proposes a methodology, which provides the urban planner with operational orientations on the way to introduce this dimension. To be operational, this methodology is presented under a conceptualised form, directly related to urban geometry. It brings together the collected data in operative concepts, which constitutes the guiding steps in a climatic urban design. The presented methodology is mostly based on the comprehension of the dependence between different climatic control objectives (solar access, shadowing, nocturnal cooling, exterior and interior ventilation, etc.) and the geometric properties of the urban fabric (vertical profile H/L, plan density, spacing between buildings, building dimensions, wind incidence, solar orientation, etc.). These parameters are grouped in the following concepts: openness to the sky, urban reflectance, urban porosity, directionality, built envelope, and landscaping. Each of these concepts is explained, by reminding the climatic objective it controls, the geometrical parameters that orientates it, and presents some conception recommendations.
