Abstract

The use of vegetation has been recognized as an important means for microclimatic modification within and outside buildings. The plants around a building can affect its exposure to the sun and wind and consequently its indoor comfort conditions and the energy use for cooling or heating. This paper attempts to explore the several factors involved -namely sun and wind in planning an energy efficient vegetation. Some criteria to be followed in planning well-designed vegetation around buildings, appropriate for temperate climates are presented. The microclimatic conditions of the Thessaloniki area, in Northern Greece, are used as a reference.
