Abstract

Electricity Efficient Management combines itself to the list of challenges faced by the Municipalities. When dealing with that subject, the Brazilian Municipalities have the opportunity to manage the use of electricity in their centers of consumption – public lighting, public buildings and sanitation systems – controlling the performance and establishing a planning for energy efficiency. However, the majority of Municipalities do not have a staff with knowledge of the subject or a department with specific attributions to fully exert the energy management. The aim of this study is to show the importance of a network, facilitated, nowadays, by the advances of information and communication systems, and how it can collaborate to speed up• the exchange of information, experiences and projects of energy efficiency, besides stimulating the transference of proven techniques and knowledge between the Municipalities. A survey of the municipal experiences in efficient use of electricity was made and the results reached by networks ‘Énergie-cités’, Municipal Energy Efficiency Network’, ‘Cities for Climate Change’ and, mainly, by the Brazilian one ‘Rede Cidades Eficientes em Energia Elétrica’, launched in 1998 by ELETROBRAS in partnership with IBAM -Brazilian Institute of Municipal Administration and that has 311 Municipalities affiliate members, were analyzed.
