Abstract

The aim of this paper is the study and comparison on the thermal performance of traditional and contemporary versions of the residential courtyard in the hot arid region of north-eastern Mexico, particularly in the city of Monterrey and its immediate surroundings. Two case studies were selected as feasible examples of the history and evolution of the courtyard building typology in the region. Short term monitoring recording air temperature and relative humidity was undertaken to assess the effect of design parameters such as envelope to surface ratio, geometry, orientation and surface materials on the thermal performance of each residential patio, focusing on summer conditions. Solar access studies were performed to visualize the shading possibilities in each courtyard throughout the day and year and to evaluate their effect on the courtyard’s thermal performance. The conclusions of this paper and the ongoing research in residential buildings are expected to provide useful information for architects and designers in the region.
