Abstract

The spectral response in heave of a free floating spar buoy is investigated. The hydrodynamic load due to waves is considered the predominant one, and is evaluated on the basis of the Froude-Krylov hypothesis. Wave action is assumed as a stationary narrow-band random process with Gaussian distribution, and the resulting displacement and wave force spectra are determined with Airy's linear theory. For that purpose, displacement and force response amplitude operators are thoroughly determined. For the elaboration of a parametric study on the practical dimensions of the spar buoy, a reliable computer program was developed for preliminary analysis. Several statistical design variables are evaluated from spectral moments of the response spectra.
