Abstract

While computer simulations, such as those used for structural analyses, have had an important impact on engineering, computers have the potential to provide useful engineering support in many other ways. However, tasks such as design and diagnosis are fundamentally different from simulation. This is demonstrated in terms of basic logic. Development methodologies and software features that perform satisfactorily for simulation are thus not necessarily applicable to other engineering tasks. Over the past fifteen years, engineering developers have been creating new strategies that are more in harmony with engineering needs. This has resulted in a new generation of software products. In addition, efforts are underway to increase knowledge of fundamental computer science in engineering curricula so that engineers are better equipped to benefit from future, and evidently unknown, developments.
