Abstract

Over the last twenty five years, much has been written about solar powered water pumps. Clean water for all has been promised at minimal cost, particularly with projected reductions in price of photovoltaic panels. Unfortunately, whilst some projects have proved particularly successful, there are still many voices of doubt, questioning whether photovoltaic based water pumping systems can ever be considered to be “Appropriate Technology” in developing countries. This paper therefore considers the reality of the solar powered pump and its technology. It investigates the feasibility of putting high-technology equipment into a lowtechnology environment and shows how various means of obtaining water fit within the development process. In concluding that solar powered water pumps do have a place in Sustainable Development and that they can be considered to be "Appropriate", it suggests what conditions should be met for this to be the case.
